There are many levels to the term landscape. Seen through a window, from an observation point, or through the filter of our imagination, the landscape is always there to keep us in our place. It could be one of hot desert sands, towering pines, or even urban sprawl. It could also be the ideal landscape to which we aspire in our gardens and our dreams. Whatever: it is always with us and always personal.

Although the forces of nature can construct wonders like the Grand Canyon, it is the force of the imagination that constructs the landscape that we take to our hearts. Not as sublime, but much more meaningful, it is this landscape that we see when we close our eyes and the one that provides artists and photographers with a livelihood.

By arranging paint and silver, they attempt to communicate the things that the land cannot communicate on its own. The framed images that they place on our walls contain, not the real world, but one with a message - in varying degrees, the message of the artist and the message of the land itself.

This website is devoted to the landscape of the Western United States and my humble efforts to communicate its diversity. My medium is silver monochrome large format photography and the subject matter is the untracked, seldom seen land upon which I travel……without the issues and without the soapbox. You will find a section on the Wehman Field Camera, a technical discussion, general discourse, some personal information and the Contact feature…..please use it freely.

Best Regards and Safe Travels,

Bruce Wehman
